How the sizing math works

  1. Daily water use: people × ~70 gallons/day.
  2. Effective hardness: hardness in gpg (ppm ÷ 17.1) + 4 gpg per 1 ppm of dissolved iron.
  3. Daily grain load: daily gallons × effective hardness.
  4. Capacity: daily load × 7 days, rounded to the next standard size (24k, 32k, 40k, 48k, 64k, 80k, 96k, 110k).

That weekly-regeneration target balances salt efficiency against resin health. Dealers who skip the math and default everyone to 64k are selling hardware, not sizing it.

When a softener is the wrong (or partial) answer

Does iron in well water change softener sizing?

Is a bigger water softener always better?
