Lead in Well Water: Why It's Almost Always Your Plumbing, Not the Aquifer

Lead in well water almost never comes from the aquifer. It leaches from your own plumbing — brass faucets and valves, pre-1986 lead solder, and older brass pump or foot-valve parts — when corrosive, low-pH water sits in the pipes. EPA's public-water action level is 15 ppb, but the health goal is zero. That's actually good news: a plumbing problem is far cheaper to fix than a groundwater problem. Here's how to prove where yours is coming from and make it stop.

Where does lead in well water actually come from?

Almost always from metal the water touches after it leaves the ground: brass and bronze faucets, valves, and fittings (legally up to 8% lead until 2014), lead-tin solder on copper joints made before the 1986 ban, and leaded-brass components in submersible pumps built before 1995. Natural groundwater lead is rare. Corrosive water dissolving those parts is common.

The driver is corrosion. Water with a pH below 6.5, low hardness, and low alkalinity (under about 30 mg/L) is aggressive toward metal — USGS maps show it across New England, the Appalachians, the Southeast's granite belts, and the Pacific Northwest. If you see blue-green stains under faucets, pinhole leaks in copper, or a metallic taste, you have acidic water, and every brass part in the house is slowly going into your glass. Ironically, hard water is protective here: the scale it lays down coats the metal. A few older wells add their own sources — lead "packers" above well screens (common before 1980) and brass well screens from before the 1960s — but those are the exception.

What is the safe level of lead in drinking water?

There isn't one. EPA's Maximum Contaminant Level Goal for lead is zero. Public systems' enforceable trigger is the action level: 15 ppb (0.015 mg/L) today, dropping to 10 ppb under the 2024 Lead and Copper Rule Improvements, compliance date November 1, 2027. None of it applies to private wells. You're the regulator.

  • Not detected (under 1–2 ppb): no lead problem at that tap — retest after any plumbing work and every few years.
  • Detected, under 15 ppb: act anyway, cheapest steps first; there's no threshold below which children's exposure is fine.
  • Over 15 ppb: stop drinking unfiltered water from that tap today, then work the fix ladder below.

Health effects: silent, and worst for children under 6

Lead poisoning has no early symptoms — no taste, no smell, no stomach ache. Damage shows up later as lowered IQ, attention and learning problems, and slowed growth in children, and as high blood pressure and kidney effects in adults. Children under six and pregnant women are the highest-risk group, and a formula-fed infant can get 40–60% of their total lead exposure from tap water. The CDC uses a blood lead reference value of 3.5 micrograms per deciliter (lowered from 5 in 2021) to flag children who need follow-up. If your water tests positive, ask the pediatrician for a blood lead test — it's inexpensive and definitive.

How do you test well water for lead?

Send two samples to a certified lab: a first-draw sample of cold water that has sat unused for at least 6 hours (overnight is ideal), then a flushed sample after running the same tap for 1–2 minutes. Lead runs $25–$60 per sample. Test strips can't read the single-digit ppb levels that matter — skip them.

The pair is the diagnosis. High first-draw, low flushed means the lead is near the tap — the faucet or the last few solder joints — and flushing works while you fix it. Both elevated means the source is upstream: the pump, well components, or water so corrosive that every joint in the house contributes. Both low means that tap is fine. The fix ladder, cheapest first

  1. Flush after stagnation (free): run the cold tap 30 seconds to 2 minutes — until it turns noticeably colder — before drawing water to drink or cook. If the pump is suspect, several minutes. Also unscrew and rinse the faucet aerator screen at least twice a year and after any plumbing work — lead and solder particles collect there — and flush for several extra minutes after any work on the pipes or fixtures.
  2. Cold water only (free): hot water pulls more lead from brass and solder. Never cook, make formula, or fill a kettle from the hot tap.
  3. Point-of-use filter ($30–$1,500): look for certification to NSF/ANSI 53 with lead listed — pitchers and faucet-mounts run $30–$80, under-sink units $100–$400. NSF/ANSI 58 reverse osmosis ($300–$1,500) removes 90%+ of lead and also handles arsenic and nitrate, which is why it's the usual pick for a well. Countertop distillers ($150–$500) work but are slow. Change cartridges on schedule.
  4. Replace old fixtures ($100–$400 each): since the Reduction of Lead in Drinking Water Act of 2011 took effect on January 4, 2014, "lead-free" means a weighted average of 0.25% lead on wetted surfaces (it was 8% before). Start with the kitchen faucet and any shutoff valves feeding it.
  5. Neutralize corrosive water ($800–$3,000): a calcite tank or soda ash injection at the wellhead raises pH and alkalinity so the water stops dissolving metal — the only fix that protects every tap and your pipes at once. Two cautions on injection: soda ash adds sodium to every gallon (a typical dose adds roughly 20–30 mg/L), so anyone on a sodium-restricted diet should ask their doctor before choosing it over calcite; and insist on soda ash rather than sodium hydroxide (caustic soda), which is far more hazardous to handle and refill. Check the pump ($150–$3,500): pump makers switched to lead-free brass, stainless, or plastic wetted parts for submersibles built after January 1, 1995, and EPA's 1994–95 testing found leaded-brass pumps leach the most when new — tap levels near or above 15 ppb in the first weeks, tapering to under 5 ppb in most homes after a month or two. An old pump is therefore rarely the whole answer: replace it only when both samples stay elevated after fixtures and corrosive water have been ruled out. Retest first-draw after each step you take, always from an unfiltered tap (or from the bypass/upstream side of any filter you installed). A filter makes the number drop without finding anything — it protects only that tap and only while the cartridge is fresh. The moment an unfiltered first-draw sample drops to non-detect, you've found the source — and you can stop climbing.

What does not remove lead

  • Boiling: evaporates water and concentrates the lead left behind. The dangerous "fix."
  • Ordinary carbon pitchers and fridge filters: NSF/ANSI 42 certification covers chlorine, taste, and odor — not lead. Only a filter certified to Standard 53 for lead reduction counts.
  • Water softeners: swap calcium and magnesium for sodium; they aren't designed or certified to capture lead, and they don't raise pH. Put a neutralizer ahead of one — never a softener in place of one.
  • Whole-house sediment or carbon tanks: catch grit and chlorine, not dissolved metals.
  • Letting the hot water tank "settle": heat and long contact time make hot water the worst source in the house.
Bottled water for the baby first: if a first-draw result comes back over 15 ppb and there's a formula-fed infant or a pregnancy in the house, switch to bottled or NSF/ANSI 53-filtered water for drinking and formula today — then work the ladder.
