- Use warm water daily. Regular showers, laundry, and dishwashing send heat through the system. This is why occupied homes rarely freeze and why problems cluster at part-time properties.
- Insulate known problem spots. A line that froze before will freeze again: before the ground freezes, lay 2–4 inches of rigid foam board, an 8–12 inch layer of loose straw or mulch, or an insulated tarp over the line's path and the tank lids. Risers get insulated lids or a foam plug.
- Keep grass a little long over the field going into winter — taller grass catches and holds snow.
- Never park or drive on the system — winter's frozen ground feels drivable and compacts anyway, and a vehicle over a drainfield is a year-round prohibition, not just a summer one.
Well and water-line freeze protection
- The service line is usually safe — it was trenched below frost depth at installation. The risk lives where pipe surfaces: wellhead, crawl spaces, well pits, and pump houses.
- Insulate the wellhead properly: an insulated well cover or faux-rock enclosure works; wrapping the casing in fiberglass that gets wet does not. Keep the cap sealed — a cracked cap admits both bacteria and cold.
- Heat tape for exposed runs: UL-listed self-regulating heat cable on pipes in crawl spaces and pump houses, plugged into a working GFCI — replace any tape older than its rated life; they're a known fire item.
- Drain outdoor spigots and irrigation — and disconnect hoses; a connected hose holds water back into the frost-free sillcock and splits it.
- Pressure tank in an unheated space: insulate the tank and lines, add a thermostat-controlled space heater for deep-cold snaps, or box the assembly with foam board. A frozen pressure tank tears open at the seams.
